It’s quiet here
there used to be
you, me, three kids, two cats, a dog
that’s eight
eight
you left
seven
our daughter went to college
six
we got a new kitten
seven
our 6 year-old cat died
six
you texted our daughter “Theodore is dead.”
thank goodness I had already called her
our newest kitten died
five
you didn’t know him
you never knew him
after next year, our son will go to school
four
three years later our youngest will leave
three
the dog will be old by then
I hope
how long do dogs live?
two
and I don’t believe cats ever live long enough either
one
I will be here
just me
because my family keeps getting smaller

Great post! It’s very touching how you express the progression of time and the changing dynamics of your family. It’s a reminder of how precious our loved ones are and how quickly time passes. I have a question for you – have you found any particular ways to cope with the loss of your pets?

I find writing about it helps the most. We write to them before we bury them, and then I continue to write about them – and talk about them. It’s hard though. Very hard.

I just want to wrap my arms around you right now…
If it makes any difference, the fact that I was with the before man for almost 30 years, and will likely not get that much time with the after man regularly pisses me off! Still!
