It’s probably the weather, or the fact that February is ending that makes me think of this time, 4 years ago.
That weekend I went away with friends to a cabin. Thank goodness we went away before covid, before my friend died.
It was a cold Sunday at the end of February. When I got home, the house was empty.
(That was when it still felt weird to have an empty house.)
I joined you and the kids and Heather and her family at a play.
We sat with them. We talked about spring break plans. I laughed with her.
That’s it.
Sometimes these little moments flash into my memory. And I guess that it’s these little moments of betrayal that are surprisingly the most startling.

I’m catching up on some of your posts I missed. It always surprised me, those little moments looking back that make me think, now how did I miss that? Or those moments that just hurt, like when you have a sore in your mouth, and you just can’t keep poking at it… I am so much better than I was one, two, or even three years out. And yet, I can still find that mouth sore when I look for it.
